The map most of us grew up with — the Mercator projection — was drawn in 1569 for sailors, not classrooms. It keeps compass bearings straight, but it badly inflates land the further you go from the equator: Greenland looks bigger than Africa, when Africa is actually about 14 times larger.
On 4 September 2026 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution recommending the Equal Earth projection — which preserves true relative size — for official use. True World Map lets you see that correction for yourself: pick any country, or compare a few, and see its real size against the map you're used to.
Who built it
An independent, small side project — not affiliated with the UN, National Geographic, or any mapping company. Country boundaries come from the public-domain Natural Earth dataset; the size math is standard equal-area cartography, not an opinion.
