About this site

The map most of us grew up with was drawn in 1569 for sailors, not classrooms. It keeps compass bearings straight, but it badly inflates land the further you go from the equator: Greenland looks bigger than Africa, when Africa is actually about 14 times larger.

On 4 September 2026 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution encouraging the Equal Earth projection — which preserves true relative size — wherever a map is used to compare sizes. New Map lets you see that correction for yourself: pick any country, or compare a few, and see its real size against the map you're used to.

Who built it

An independent, small side project — not affiliated with the UN, National Geographic, or any mapping company. Country boundaries come from the public-domain Natural Earth dataset; the size math is standard equal-area cartography, not an opinion.
